It is rare to find gluten free Japanese food so I was excited to visit Akari. They did not disappoint, the food was excellent. My husband could not stop raving about the dumplings (not GF). Highly recommend.
We love Akari! We went for dinner for my birthday, and loved it so much we went back the next night as well! Having lived in the Inner West in Sydney we are used to having easy access to great Japanese, and this restaurant takes the cake! The food was fresh and oishi, especially the nasu dengaku and unagi! I also love the plum wine! The atmosphere was really nice and cosy, and the staff were very friendly. This is our favourite Japanese restaurant ever!
I decided to give this place a try due to its very high rating. I ordered the sashimi and sushi plate for $29, and was disappointed that the sashimi had only salmon and tuna. The sushi had 1 piece of scallop and another piece of possibly king fish as listed on the menu besides salmon and tuna. The salmon tasted good, but I had better tuna elsewhere. The sushi rice was a bit chewy and fell apart very easily. So maybe it was good to eat the fallen-off rice from every piece of sushi with the sashimi pieces since there was no fresh rice that came with the sashimi which is how I usually enjoy my sashimi. My favorite sushi and sashimi are typically the more exotic items like uni, amaebi, tsubukai, etc., and none of these was on the menu.
Tantalising fresh, tuna, not the belly, but the soft back, on sushi rice with a heft of wasabi, fine balance and four pieces with a small slab of tuna on the side. This nigiri sushi is worth your visit. The kingfish wasn't as soft and perhaps a little tired. But still fresh and a great taste. The seaweed salad was a treat, edamame beans, two types of seaweed, a smidge of carrot, finely cut white cabbage, tomato, capsicum, oak leaf lettuce, and a drizzle of mayonnaise dressing. It's fresh, bright and delivers some hefty tastes, this is fresh. Tasty, unadulterated Japanese in Wollongong's CBD. I'm going back. From my last visit: Fresh eggplant in a miso and hoisin sauces are nicely grilled and soft. Fresh tuna, kingfish, prawn and salmon are laid out, little soldiers, on a wonderful dish, and make a tantalising nigiri sushi. We added two miso soups, with the crispy pieces of tempura batter, and a stacked plate of prawn tempura and vegetables. All three were delicious and just what we needed after a movie. This restaurant offers a simple version of many popular dishes. And it works. Tasty, and easy on the wallet. From my last visit: Fresh sushi, nicely cooked eggplant with a thick miso sauce. And lightly fried agedashi (tofu) and nigiri sushi. Shame about the rice, it was too glutinous. Otherwise a nicely balanced and tasty dinner.
Absolutely delicious! We had the karaage ramen and katsu avo sushi and both dishes were incredible. The ramen was full of flavour with perfectly crispy chicken and the sushi was fresh, tasty, and beautifully presented. The staff were friendly and welcoming and the service was quick. If youโre in Wollongong and love Japanese food, Iโd 100% recommend this place, already looking forward to coming back!
