Iโve tried both the lunch and dinner omakase here, and in my opinion the lunch is definitely better value for money, you really get what you pay for. However the dinner experience feels a tad overpriced. The ingredients were better than lunch but not very noticeable, and the overall experience falls short of a refined Japanese omakase vibe youโd expect at that price point, especially compared to other places. While the food itself is good, the dinner experience doesnโt justify the premium. I will definitely be back for lunch.
I guess you get what you pay for with this โaffordable omakase lunchโ but I wouldnโt do it again. I felt like I was sitting on an assembly line. The sushi chef is making 10 of each piece then dealing out sushi like heโs dealing cards, not chatting, just quickly throwing sushi on your plate and mumbling a name. Then back to his station preparing the next round. I felt awkward sitting there. The food: The quality and the variety was very good. The service: Overall good, waters were constantly refilled and plates clearly timely. The experience: Awkward and not great. From my notes: Kentaro: $98 lunch omakase: wouldnโt recommend the omakase bc the vibes suck itโs way too rushed and feels line cook. Food was decent but would just sit down and order a la carte (you still need a Rez to do that). oyster yuzu jelly was fun and very good. Sashimi salad fish was great quality but way too much dressing prob 2tbs at bottom of the small bowl, sunomono was diff but not bad; shiromi snapper (wasabi overpowered for me), alphonsino golden eye snapper slightly charred (9/10 melt in your mouth wow), cod? (8/10 interesting bubbly texture but good); king fish (8/10 really nice, very fragrant); maguro tuna loin (8/10 classic and delicious so tender); Japanese toro (9/10 thick and buttery and very fatty); scallop (7/10 didnโt taste very fresh, very thick with a lingering older scallop flavor, disappointing bc I love scallop); eel (12/10 unexpected favorite omgggg melted in my mouth more than the chutoro holy shit and not cooked or charred or smothered in sauce. WOW); seafood miso soup (8.5/10 never made at soup, oily bc the fish but not overly so; a touch salty more water would be good or small blocks plain tofu to cut thru); amaebi (7.5/10 tiny prawn not fresh prawn I know Iโm spoiled); negitoro temaki roll (9/10 sooo good and wrapped in a little rectangle pocket with lots of tuna and I liked the chives inside); 3 tamago - aburdi (charred) was like flan; dashi soaked was my fav liked texture and savory flavor; reg tamago like eggy dense cake but good;
Tried my luck with a walk-in as the website showed fully booked โ happily, they accepted me for lunch omakase ๐ The starter already impressed me: a simple sashimi salad that was anything but simple. Super fresh, melt-in-the-mouth sashimi. The oyster with yuzu jelly was a standout โ honestly wish I could order a dozen! The Chawanmushi was packed with seafood flavour. The M9+ truffle houba steak was delicious and very filling. I even thought I could squeeze in extra sushi, but nope โ the waiter wisely told me to take my time ๐ Great value for money if youโre after a quality omakase. The sushi bar was full (no surprise), and Iโll definitely be back to try their lunch sushi next time. ๐ฃโจ
๐ฃ Had the omakase at Kentaro on New Yearโs Eve and it truly lived up to its reputation. The freshness and quality of the ingredients reminded me of what I had in Hokkaido earlier this year โ you can tell a lot of care goes into the selection. ๐ฏ๐ต The style is more traditional rather than fusion, which I really appreciated. The seasoning was spot on and allowed the natural sweetness of the seafood to shine. The sushi rice deserves a special mention โ perfectly seasoned, slightly sticky yet well-defined. ๐ฅฉ We added the wagyu sushi on the staffโs recommendation and it was a fantastic choice, rich but well balanced, and a great way to finish the meal. Service was attentive and professional throughout. Would happily return ๐
If youโre on the fence about omakase at Kentaro, let this be your sign to book! We had the sushi kaiseki omakase set and chef Ken and the team really did not disappoint. The night felt intimate and you donโt realise the time flying because the courses feel like they donโt stop. Each dish was an experience and so so memorable! We highly recommend opting in for the extra course of Ozaki beef as the Wanmono broth dish was a massive highlight! Already thinking about our next visit to Kentaro, very thankful to the team for making our first omakase visit such a high ๐
